GLAZED TERRACOTTA PANEL by LUISO STURLA – 120×160 – 2011
In 1953, together with Bartolomeo Sanguineti, Vittorio Ugolini, architect Alberto Galardi and other painters, Luiso Sturla founded the Chiavari-based group of the ‘Pittori del Golfo’ (Gulf Painters). In the 50’s he also joined M.A.C. (Concrete Art Movement), which was then to merge with André Bloc’s ‘Groupe Espace’. In 1960 he moved to New York’s East Side where he lived for one year. Inspired by the frequent fires among the neighborhood’s colonial-style houses and sheds, he painted a cycle called ‘After the blaze’, which he exhibited in the 90’s, in a series of three shows titled ‘American Cards’. He has long lived in Spain and in New York. There, he became acquainted with some of the most remarkable figures of both informal and pop art, whose influence he managed to develop into his own decidedly personal creative style, now renowned on both a national and international scale. In 1987 he took part to the XXXth National Biennale of the Arts in Milan, where he had his works on display again in 1994. A tireless and prolific artist, he’s constantly on the move between his studio in Milan, native Chiavari and Ceramiche San Giorgio ceramic workshop in Albisola, where he has been experimenting with ceramic- making for a few years now. He’s well-known in Italy and Switzerland where he has regularly held shows and his works have often been selected for important art contests. His latest solo exhibition, “Luiso Sturla. Landscape alphabet’ was held in 2011, at Palazzo Reale in Genoa.
