LET’S GO TO THE BEACH! – ALFREDO SOSABRAVO

GLAZED TERRACOTTA PANEL by ALFREDO SOSABRAVO – cm. 120X80 – 2012

TITLE: VAMOS A LA PLAYA!  (LET’S GO TO THE BEACH!)

In his 20′s, Alfredo Sosabravo became fascinated by the works of  his fellow countryman, surrealist artist Wilfredo Lam and between 1950 and 1966, he started experimenting with several painting techniques: his oils on canvas or cardboard reveal his devotion to details. He also developed a passion for xylography, and subsequently brilliantly interpreted lithography. In 1965, he approached ceramic-making and became so keen on it to start collaborating with such manufacturers as Giovanni Poggio of Ceramiche San Giorgio ceramic workshop, who will then remain one of his dearest fellow-artists and friends. Sosabravo’s fantastic and ironic universe is made up of extravagant creatures: his bizarre birds and fish, together with the equally extravagant broken-lined human heads, give life to that unique inner dynamism which is the distinguishing feature of his works. Sosabravo, presently one of the most renowned Cuban contemporary artists, helped by René Palenzuela, is still incessantly working on his diverse productions, which also include the ceramic pieces he  makes in Albisola. A collection of some of his latest works was on display at the Macro Museum in Rome, in 2011.
