FRANZ HITZLER

GLAZED TERRACOTTA PANEL by FRANZ HITZLER – cm. 120×80 – 2011

It was his passion for Rembrandt which led Franz Hitzler to deeply study the Dutch master and eventually devote himself to painting. In 1963 he started his own studio-house in Asbach and then moved to Munich where he attended the Academy of Beaux Arts and was Fritz Nagel’s disciple. In his early years, Hitzler deepened his knowledge of both pictorial-ceramics and other techniques such as xylography. His works have been on display at some of the greatest museums in the world: the National Gallery of Art in Washington, the New York Museum of Modern Art, Palazzo Forti in Verona and Berlin’s Academy of Beaux Art, just to mention some. His artistic career was marked by numerous awards: the Fórderpreis from the Bavarian Ministry of Culture in 1981; the Membership to the Bavarian Academy of Beaux Arts in 1997 and the ‘Kunstpreis des Bezirks Schwaben’ in 2011.
